To give you an example, beginning in late 2010, our long-term customer Oriental Trading Co. (OTC) agreed to direct 100% of its offshore product through our container freight stations in Shenzhen, Xiamen, Ningbo and Qingdao. Century personnel conduct a “level 1” inspection of all OTC products and “level 2” checks for designated items. We open cartons and identify products that fail to meet OTC’s quality standards or packaging requirements. Since inspections take place before the goods are stuffed, OTC gains leverage to reject or negotiate a discounted price for product that doesn’t meet their standards.
Shipping damaged or sub-par product back to China is a major headache. Moving QA processes upstream has enabled OTC to stop shipment of inferior products, which in the first 9 months of operation were valued at more than USD 1.5 million.” OTC can now reallocate labor at their DC previously tasked with spot-inspecting products upon arrival.
